When renting makes sense
- A short or uncertain need: recovery after an operation, a terminal illness, a temporary stay with family.
- Before a move: when you expect to move to a home without stairs.
- To try before buying: some companies credit part of the rent if you buy later. Ask.
When buying makes sense
- A long-term need: after a year or two, buying usually costs less than renting.
- Curved stairs: the rail is made for your stairs, so renting often means buying the rail and renting only the chair and motor (as one Dutch maker's price page shows).
- Grants: most grants pay towards a purchase, not rent.
What rental agreements should say
- The monthly price and any upfront installation and removal fees.
- Who pays for servicing and repairs during the rental.
- The minimum rental period and the notice period.
- Whether rent paid counts towards buying the lift.

How much does it cost to rent a stairlift?
