What makes a stairlift cheaper or more expensive
- The shape of the stairs. A straight rail is a standard part cut to length. A rail for turns, landings or winders is made to measure from a survey of your stairs, which is why a curved stairlift usually costs two to three times as much.
- The length of the rail. Longer stairs or two floors need more rail.
- New or reconditioned. Reconditioned stairlifts are checked, repaired used lifts, mostly for straight stairs, with a shorter warranty.
- Options. A powered swivel seat, a folding rail at the bottom, a heavy-duty model for a heavier user, an outdoor version.
- What is included. Installation, the first service, the warranty and later removal are not always in the same price. Compare like with like with the quote checker.

Stairlifts run on batteries that charge when the lift is parked, so the electricity cost is small. Plan for a yearly service and, every few years, new batteries.
Lower the bill
- Check the grants and tax reliefs in your country before you order. Some must be approved before the work starts.
- If the need is short-term, renting can cost less than buying.
- Get two or three quotes for the same stairs. A Which? survey of UK owners found different brands' average prices differed by several hundred pounds.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a stairlift cost?
It depends on the country and on the stairs. The table above shows the sourced range for your country; in the UK, for example, Which? owners paid from about £2,000 for a straight stairlift, and curved stairlifts cost £7,000 or more.
Why do curved stairlifts cost so much more?
The rail is designed and bent for your staircase from a survey, and it can't be reused elsewhere without changes. A straight rail is a standard part cut to length.
Is installation included in stairlift prices?
Usually, but not always. Check that installation, the first service and the warranty are in the quote, and ask what removal would cost later.
What does a stairlift cost to run?
Electricity is a small cost because the batteries charge while the lift is parked. The bigger costs are the yearly service and battery replacement every few years; see the running-cost table.
