Stairlifts for spiral stairs

A stairlift on a spiral staircase is possible in some homes: the stairs need to be wide enough and the spiral gentle enough for a curved rail. Tight spirals usually need a different answer.

What decides it

  • Width: spiral stairs are often narrow at the inside; the rail usually goes on the outside, where the treads are deepest.
  • Steepness at the rail: the tighter the spiral, the steeper the rail; curved stairlifts have a maximum angle (for example 56° for the Handicare 4000).
  • Headroom: the rider passes under the turn above.
  • Landing space at the top for the chair to swivel.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stairlift go on a spiral staircase?

Sometimes, with a curved rail on the outside of a wide, gentle spiral. Narrow spirals usually can't take one; a home lift is often the better answer.
