Stairlift safety

Modern stairlifts have several safety features built in. A few everyday habits make them safer still, for the user and for everyone else in the house.

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Safety features

  • Safety sensors on the carriage and footrest stop the lift if they touch an obstacle.
  • Seatbelt: standard lap belts, and on some models easier one-hand or five-point belts.
  • Swivel seat: lets the rider face the landing at the top instead of stepping off towards the stairs.
  • Key switch: stops children or visitors using the lift.
  • Constant-pressure controls: the lift only moves while the button or joystick is held.

Stairlifts are built to safety standards such as EN 81-40 in Europe and ISO 9386-2 internationally.

Everyday tips

  • Keep the stairs and rail clear: no bags, shoes or cables on the treads.
  • Always swivel to the landing side before getting off at the top.
  • Park at the charging point after every ride.
  • Teach visitors and grandchildren not to play with the lift.
  • Keep the service up to date.
