Alternatives to a stairlift
A stairlift isn't the only answer. Depending on how the person moves now and in the coming years, a simpler aid or a bigger change may suit better.

For people who can still climb
- A second handrail on the other side of the stairs.
- Stair-climbing aids such as handrail-mounted supports that lock under downward pressure (for example AssiStep or StairSteady), for people who can still walk but need support.
- Better lighting and contrasting step edges.
When climbing is no longer safe
- A stairlift (straight or curved).
- **A home lift** if a wheelchair is involved or the stairs are unsuitable.
- **A stair climber** operated by a carer.
Changing the home instead
- Moving the bedroom downstairs and adding a downstairs bathroom.
- Moving to a home without stairs.
An occupational therapist can assess what suits best; in many countries the assessment is free through the council or health service.
